Senate Committee on Armed Services Completes Markup of FY 2012 NDAA The Senate Committee on Armed Services recently finished its markup of the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) for FY 2012.  The committee approved the bill unanimously on Thursday, June 16, and it now awaits full Senate consideration.  Like its House counterpart, the Senate bill provides a 1.6 percent across-the-board pay raise for all members of the uniformed services and reauthorizes over 30 types of bonuses and special pays aimed at encouraging enlistment, reenlistment, and continued service by active-duty and Reserve component personnel.

AFSA On Call

House Defense Appropriations Bill:  The House Appropriations Committee approved its fiscal year 2012 Defense Appropriations Bill on Tuesday.  This legislation contains funding for critical national security needs, and provides the necessary resources to continue the nation’s military efforts abroad.  In addition, the bill provides essential funding for health and quality of life programs for the men and women of the Armed Services and their families.

INTERNMENT OF PAST AFSA INTERNATIONAL PRESIDENT ELMER R. ANDREWS

Last Friday, Past International President, CMSgt Elmer R. Andrews was laid to rest with full military honors at Arlington National Cemetery. He was interned in Section 68, Space 31 along with his former wife Audrey Andrews (Past International Aux President). President Andrews was extremely active with AFSA until his recent passing and he attended every AFSA International Convention/Conference.

AFSA TESTIFIES ON CAPITOL HILL

The AFSA CEO testified before the Joint House and Senate Veterans AffairsCommittee on veteran priorities for FY 2012. AFSA did address many issues that affect our Active Duty, Guard and Reserve, retirees and veterans and their family members. Our major focus was on Healthcare, Veterans Benefits, Military Women, Air National Guard and Reserve Retirement, State Veterans Homes, SBP-DIC offset and the fact that there are over 42,000 wounded warriors.

TRICARE Change Proposals

Earlier we detailed how the President’s FY 2012 Budget Plan calls for annual fee increases for TRICARE Prime and further annual inflationary increases starting in 2013. It is important to keep in mind that the President’s budget plan is non-binding and has no force of law—but it does state Administration intentions. What is most important is what will be incorporated in the FY 2012 National Defense Authorization Act produced by Congress. Should Congress put a provision in the NDAA prohibiting fee increases, as they have in the past, the changes will not take place.

AFSA 1179 Softball Tournament -6 Aug 2010

Our First Annual Softball Tournament hosted by your local AFSA Chapter 1179.  We’re really looking for support from the different organizations but unfortunately we have zero teams scheduled.  BE THE FIRST!  This day was approved by Col Crossier to be an alternate duty location!  There will be a burger burn during the games as well.

When:  6 August 2010

Time:  Starts at 0800 depending on the number of teams

Where:  Buckley Softball Fields

Cost:  $100 per team ($10/person) min 9 players per team

Sign up date ends: 2 August 2010

Winners:  First and Second Place teams receive trophies

Adopt-a-Street cleanup- AFSA 1179- Saturday, 24 Jul 2010

Need or want some volunteer hours?  We are organizing another Adopt-a-Street cleanup for our local Air Force Sergeants Association chapter!

Date:  24 July 2010 (Saturday)  Time:  0830 – 1100’sh

Location:  Tower Rd. between Mississippi and Iliff.  We will meet in the parking lot of Tower Community Fellowship Church (on the left off Tower if coming from base, at the corner of Tower and Powerline Trail rd.) We will try to get as many supplies as we can, but I recommend that you bring gloves and sun block.  Also, long pants may be warranted as some areas have overgrown grass.  We will have bottles of water.

If you can make it, please send me an e-mail so I can make sure to bring enough water and vests.  In your email, please include your: Name, Rank, Organization. The more people we have, the faster the work will go. Please feel free to bring your dependents as well. We ask that if you bring small dependents to remember that traffic will be around us. AFSA MEETS WITH STAFF OF SENATORS AKAKA AND COLLINS

AFSA Director of Military and Government Relations met with key staff members of Senators Akaka and Collins to encourage legislation that would allow adult children to continue medical coverage under the TRICARE health care plan until the age of 26, at no additional cost to the sponsoring parent – either an active duty or retired parent (enrolled in TRICARE).
